People often find it difficult to use the words ‘fare’ ‘fee’ ‘rate’ and ‘price’. These words are all connected to money but how are they different and how do we use them?
First look at these sentences. In each space should we put ‘fare’ ‘fee’ ‘rate’ or ‘price’?
1. That lawyer is really expensive. His ____ is 30000 yen an hour.
2. Is breakfast included in the room ____? Yes at this hotel it is.
3. It’s becoming more expensive to travel by plane. The ____s at many airlines have increased by more than 40%.
4. Because of this year’s tax rise the ____s of many products have increased.
Now if it’s difficult to choose the right word in these sentences think about these rules:
Fare
This is connected to public transport and to taxis. We can say a bus fare train fare air fare or taxi fare.
Fee
This is the money you pay when someone provides a professional service. Doctors lawyers and estate agents all charge fees. At school university or a language school you pay tuition fees.
Rate
This is connected to rooms in hotels but we can also use it for meeting rooms or conference rooms. We can say ‘the rate for a double room is 10000 yen a night’.
Price
This is the amount of money that we have to pay to buy something. We can say for example that the price of a Toyota car is 200000 yen.
So the missing words in sentences 1 to 4 are: 1. fee 2. rate 3. fares and 4. prices.
Finally let’s try these sentences. Put the words ‘fare’ ‘fee’ ‘rate’ or ‘price’ in each space.
5. If you book early we’ll give you a 10% discount on the daily ____ for our conference rooms.
6. The ____ from Osaka to London is 130000 yen in Economy Class and 270000 yen in Business Class.
